Outdoor bulb exhibition ‘Behind the screens’ (Lisse, NL)
In 2004 LEGU received an honorable mention for their entry ‘Behind the screens’ that reacts creatively upon the necessary infrastructure within the Dutch ‘Bollenstreek’ bulb field region.
LEGU’s design criticises the image of classic bulb barns within blooming fields suggested by a competition that was propelled by the fear of losing the traditional landscape in the Dutch bulb region. Cleary, the region is not characterized by the bulb shed but the bulb culture, a modern, profitable form of agriculture. The ‘desired landscape’ is solely visible for a few weeks in spring. ‘Behind the screens’ stimulates the discussion about de dependence of detested but necessary elements within the bulb culture. Traditionally used windscreens are imprinted and travelling within the region for a year. Every month one of the aspects of bulb reality (illegal seasonal labour, gene manipulation and hi-tech freezing houses) is set in the spotlights. Behind the screens, naturally, life and work continue. (Collaboration with L. van den Burg)
