Sculpture garden ‘Het Oude Buurtje’ (Hoofddorp, NL)

2004

After LEGU was commissioned with the renovation of the former townhall we were also asked to make a sketch for the future sculpture garden around the building in the ‘Oude Buurtje’ quarter.

The proposal is based upon the measurements of the still today visible pieces of land created when pumping out the Haarlemmermeer : 200m x 1000m. The measures were derived from the lives of the early inhabitants: exactly the surface a farmer could work upon within one day in 1850. LEGU proposed to keep these lots in orientation and proportion, but to transform them tot the most important measure of the inhabitants in the 21 st century: the width of a parking lot. Typically for a sculpture garden changing art pieces can be parked upon the new lots. In accordance with the original use each year different seeds can be planted on the individual pieces of land. Visitors to the garden stroll on small paths in between the lots. Some lots are paved for terraces; and of course for parking lots.
