Johanna Gunther

Johanna Gunther MSc is director of lehner en gunther architecten in Amsterdam. Next to this she is senior lecturer for architecture and urban planning at the department of Architecture at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. There she develops and organizes parts of the curriculum, works with students and gives lectures. Also, she is attached to the lectoraat MI(d)R, multiple intensive and sustainable use of space at the very same University.

Born in Eastern Germany in 1975 and a resident of Holland since 1987, Johanna Gunther studied Architecture at the TU Delft. She worked at various Architectural offices and realized her first project as a project architect, a renovation of a monumental residence in Scheveningen, in 2003 with Vis Restauratie Architecten. Next to this she lectured at the TU Delft and coordinated the Master education Knowledge and Experience of Space of the department of interiors led by Professor Tony Fretton. At Hans van Heeswijk architecten Johanna worked as a PR coordinator and realized the monograph ‘Hans van Heeswijk architectuur 1995-2005’which was awarded the German ‘Schönste Deutsche Bücher’ prize.

Johanna is interested in the entire building process; from the design in its context until the detailed materialization and realization. She is fascinated by human scale, materialization, usability, re-use, spatiality, light, clarity and emptiness within the field of architecture.
