‘Scratching the surface’
Project type: invited competition

Date: 2006
‘Scratching the surface’ activates one of the most unique (yet in terms of design unexplored) material qualities of Funder MAX EXTERIOR panels: the durability, weather resistance and decorativeness – not only of the surface but also the core layer.
The core of the ‘duromer high-pressure laminates’ consists of natural fibers, which have been impregnated with synthetic resin at great pressure and high temperature – an ingenious, versatile and intelligent base material that unfortunately does not become visible As beauty is the visual representation of intelligence, why not dear to show it?
‘Scratching the surface’ uses the technique of milling to bring the core to the surface. The layering of the material in combination with different milling depth offers a multitude of possible textures. Giving literally a third dimension to the surface of the panels: relief, shadows and tactility – generally appreciated material qualities, which are often lacking with contemporary synthetic materials.
The use of computer controlled table surface millers in combination with the high mechanical strength of the Funder MAX EXTERIOR panels allows for unseen decorative perforations and engravings. A possible field of application is the reuse of traditional decorative patterns for up to date design. A much wide range of applications of the Funder panels is now possible. This includes balcony railings, window shutters and benches by ingeniously bridging the gap between the blessings of technology and the longing for the vernacular.
